Happiness usually has a reason. The plan worked out. Someone called. The sun is out. Dinner was good. Life, for a minute, is cooperating.
Joy is a little different.
When Paul writes “Rejoice always,” he isn’t writing from an easy life. He knew disappointment, loss, prison, uncertainty - all the things that make “just be happy” feel almost insulting.
Biblical joy doesn’t ask us to pretend those things don’t hurt. It gives us something deeper to stand on when they do.
The gospel tells us that our hope is not held together by everything going our way. It is held by a God who came near, suffered with us, defeated death and promised that even the hardest parts of our story are not the end.
So we can have a terrible day and still have joy. Cry and still have joy. Be waiting for an answer and still know we are deeply loved.
Happiness says, “This is good.”
Joy says, “God is still good.”
And sometimes, thankfully, we get both.
