First to speak. First to be noticed. First to make sure we get ours. Half the time we are not even trying to compete — we just got very used to protecting our spot.
Then Jesus does something almost embarrassingly different.
He washes feet.
The One with nothing to prove chooses the lowest seat in the room. Not because He thinks less of Himself, but because He knows exactly who He is.
I love that distinction. Humility is not disappearing or pretending we do not matter. It is being secure enough to make room for somebody else.
The gospel gives us that security first. We are already seen. Already loved. Already held.
Someone else getting the attention, the opportunity, or the better seat does not take anything away from us.
Sometimes kindness really is that simple.
